TV Studio Production - Workshop

In this weeks TV Studio Production we were set a sort of trial task for before our main assignment. The task was to shoot a presenter making a paper plane, then throwing it, it had to be around 2 minutes and appropriate for young children. It also needed to be informative, so that a viewer could actually produce the plane after watching.

I looked here: www.paperairplaneshq.com at different ways to make a paper planes because I have to admit I didn't know how to make one.

I then looked into how other people had made their own tutorials. On YouTube I found many amateur style videos but found this particular video by Howcast had the professional look I had envisioned.

I suppose I'll just let the group know of my research in our next meeting and hopefully it'll be useful.

TV Studio Production

As I mentioned a few posts back the TV studio is what I've been looking forward to the most and since we had a tour of the studio I literally cannot wait to try the cameras out. We've been assigned our brief and sorted into teams. Our teams were based on people within our class that we hadn't really worked with before, at first I was a little aprehensive as it was easy to work with my friends but on reflection I think working with those I wouldn't usually work with will propose a welcome challenge and also put a pressure to work at my full potential as it is easy to become lazy or distracted when with friends.

My group consists of :

Ceri Dack - Floor Manager
Gemma Blaney - Producer
Amy Palin Tune - Director
James Dunn - Presenter
Josh McDowell - Presenter
Me - Set Designer

Once sorted into groups we decided who would play each role within the group. I was assigned the role of Set Designer which I was both glad and dissapointed about. As I studied art and design at A-level this was within my comfort zone and I was hoping to challenge myself but when I read into detail what the responsibilities of my role were I'm glad I chose it.

Our brief is to produce a pilot episode for channel 4, the episode needs to be a magazine style show and be channel 4's lunch time show to rival competetors such a loose women. the show must fit with channel 4's style and be something different from whats been before.

This is the type of work I'd been hoping to do throughout the entire course but since it's just one module I'll have to make it count.

First Day

So today we had our first day of lectures, which started with an introduction to Digital Media Cultures which when looking at the semester timetable I was unsure as to what this module would entail, but our lecturer Keith soon cleared this up. In the module we will be exploring many aspects of the media industry and how it has affected the way we percieve media and also how it has changed our lives. I'm glad of this more theory based module because although I enjoyed the great amount of practical work last year I felt as I would have benefitted from more theory work.
In the afternoon we began work in the Beyond the Camera module. In this module we are looking into what goes into film post production, using green screen, after effects and various other packages. I'm excited to begin the assignments within this module as they will help to utilise and expand on the computer skills I already have.

All in all a great first day!

And so it begins again...

It's amazing how quickly last year passed and now I've returned to university as a 2nd year! Although I've only completed one year of my course I do feel a certain sense of acheivement, as though I'm doing something worthwhile with my time. After our huge summer break I thought I would hate having a routine again, but it just made me realise how much time I spent indoors doing nothing which can be no good for anyone.

Looking at the semester timetable on the first day the main thing that stood out to me was the tv studio module, and as the new building (yes I said new!) has a top of the line studio I'm so excited to begin work as it's something that I aspire to work in once I've completed my course. The new building is amazing! It's huge and has a Starbucks, which I know will drain my bank balance and everything is so shiny and new.

Heres to a good year!
